A) Know Your Driving Restrictions

Once you pass the test, a state police examiner will issue you an instruction permit. This learner’s permit comes with an A restriction (adult in car) that starts the same day you pass. You must abide by these rules every time you get behind the wheel:
- Your instruction permit is only valid when you are accompanied by a parent, guardian or authorized licensed driver
- The above-described passenger must be at least 21 years old and occupying a seat beside you
B) Get On the Road
The restriction lasts for a minimum of six months before you can drive unrestricted. You can renew your permit for an additional six-month period if you haven't been at fault in an accident or been convicted of a serious traffic violation within the preceding six month period.
During this time, practice driving during daylight and nighttime hours as well as when the road conditions are challenging (inclement weather, rush-hour traffic, etc.).
