Practice Driving in Louisiana

Your learner’s permit allows you to practice driving in preparation for the road test. This driving skills exam is mandatory for any first-time drivers looking to get an intermediate or full Class E license.
A) Know Your Learner’s Permit Restrictions
If you are 15, 16 or 17 years old, you must:
- Carry your permit with you any time you get behind the wheel
- Be accompanied by a licensed parent, guardian or adult who is least 21 years old
- Abide by all LA traffic and safety laws
B) Get On the Road
Permit holders must clock a minimum of 35 hours behind the wheel with a licensed adult. Be mindful of the above-stated restrictions so you do not violate any traffic laws and permit regulations, possibly postponing getting a license.
C) Get Proof of Practice Hours
Keep track of these hours as your parent or legal guardian must accompany you and write a statement attesting that you completed all required practice hours when you apply for your license.
