Practice Driving in Rhode Island

Your permit allows you to gain valuable driving experience in preparation for the road test. Grasping the importance of obeying all road rules, including your permit's driving restrictions, is part of the learning experience.
A) Know Your Learner's Permit Restrictions
Restrictions apply to both permit types:
- You must be accompanied in the front seat by a licensed driver 21 or older with a minimum of five years driving experience
- You must carry your permit with you when driving
B) Get On the Road
While holding your limited instruction permit you must accumulate 50 hours of supervised driving, with at least 10 of the hours at night. This requirement does not apply to drivers 18 or older.
C) Get Proof of Practice Hours
You must provide the DMV, before taking the road test, a signed statement from a parent or guardian verifying completion of the 50-hour requirement.
