All new drivers in South Carolina, regardless of age, must start the licensing process with a beginner's permit. Eligibility begins at 15 years old.

A) Ace a Few DMV Practice Permit Tests

Prepare for the written test by taking multiple practice exams. All questions are directly based on information found in South Carolina's Driver Manual, allowing you to accurately gauge if you're ready to test or need more time to study.

B) Gather Required Documents and South Carolina Permit Fees

Before leaving your house to take the written test, be sure to have:

  • Social Security card
  • Car insurance information
  • Payment for test and permit fees (cash, check, credit and debit cards)

C) Take the Written Permit Test

Visit any DMV office with required documents and, if younger than 18, a guardian or parent to sign your application. No appointment needed, walk-ins only. In addition to the written test, you'll also take a vision screening. Pass both you'll be awarded a South Carolina beginner's permit.
