Get a Drivers License in South Dakota
A) Make Sure You're Eligible for a South Dakota Driver's License
Restricted Minor's Permit

You may apply if:
- You're at least 14 years old
- You have held your instruction permit for 180 days, or 90 if you completed a state-approved drivers education class
- You maintained a spotless driving record during the prior six months to applying for a restricted minor's permit
Operator's License if Younger Than 18
You may apply if:
- You're at least 16 years old
- You've completed every instruction permit requirement
- You maintained a spotless driving record during the prior six months to applying for a restricted minor's permit
Operator's License if 18 or Older
You may apply if you've passed the written and vision tests.
B) Make a Road Test Appointment
Depending on your local driver exam station, you may or may not need to make an appointment. Call ahead and ask.
C) Gather Required Documents and South Dakota License Fees
On the day of the road test bring:
- Your South Dakota instruction permit
- Proof of identity
- Cash or check for license and test fees (fees listed on page three of the Driver License Manual)
D) Take the Road Test
Arrive to the test site early, accompanied by a licensed driver in a legally registered and insured vehicle. During the test you will be graded on:
- Driving preparation
- Backing
- Passing
- Parking
- Following road signs and signals
- Maintaining proper speeds
Retake Road Test
You can try again the next day. After three attempts you must pay another test fee.
E) Get Your South Dakota Driver's License
Restricted Minor's Permit
If you're younger than 18 and pass the road test you'll be given a restricted minor's permit, valid for five years. You must abide by the following driving restrictions:
- You may only drive between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. if you have the permission of your parent or guardian
- You may only drive between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. if accompanied in the front seat by a parent or guardian
Operator's License
There are no driver restrictions.
