Get a Learner Permit in Utah

All new teen drivers, starting at the age of 15, must obtain a learner's permit before getting behind the wheel. And yes, this also applies to teens 18 or older.

A) Ace a Few DMV Practice Permit Tests

Take several practice permit tests to gauge your test-readiness. The questions are similar to those found on the actual exam, directly based on information covered in the {IDriver Handbook}Utah Driver Handbook} - your prime study source.

B) Gather Required Documents and Utah Permit Fees

On the day of the written test, you'll need to bring with you:

  • Proof of Utah residency
  • Payment to cover permit and test fees

You must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to sign for financial responsibility.

C) Take the Written Permit Test

Visit your local driver licensing office. Tests are given on a walk-in basis only. While there you'll also be required to take a vision exam. Pass both and you'll leave with a learner's permit, valid for one year.

Retake Written Test

You're allowed two attempts per day.
