This Step: Get a Learner Permit
Get a Learner Permit in Utah
All new teen drivers, starting at 15 years old, must obtain a learner's permit before getting behind the wheel. And yes, this also applies to teens 19 years old or older.
A) Ace a Few DMV Practice Permit Tests
Take several practice permit tests to gauge your test-readiness. The questions are similar to those found on the actual exam, directly based on information covered in the Utah Driver Handbook - your prime study source.
B) Gather Required Documents and Utah Permit Fees
On the day of the written test, you'll need to bring with you:
- Proof of Social Security number
- Proof of identity and legal lawful status
- Proof of Utah residency
- Payment to cover permit and test fees
You must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to sign for financial responsibility.
C) Take the Written Permit Test
Visit your local driver licensing office. Tests are given on a walk-in basis only. While there you'll also be required to take a vision exam. Pass both and you'll leave with a learner's permit.
