    Get a Drivers License in Vermont

    A) Make Sure You're Eligible for a Driver's License

    Vermont Junior Operator's License

    You're eligible to apply if:

    • You've held your permit for at least 1 year
    • You've competed the driving requirement of 40 hours
    • You've completed a state-approved driver education course
    • You've maintained a spotless driving record, free of recalls, suspensions and revocations during the preceding 6 months

    Vermont Operator's License

    You may apply if:

    • You're at least 18 years old
    • You were free of recalls, suspensions or revocations

    B) Make a Road Test Appointment With the Vermont DMV

    Road tests are by appointment only. Call Central Scheduling for a test date.

    C) Gather Required Documents and Vermont License Fees

    Before taking the road test, be sure to have:

    • Your learner's permit
    • Proof of Vermont residency
    • Proof that the vehicle you're using for the road test is legally registered and insured*
    • Payment for all license and test fees

    *You must provide a vehicle for the exam and be accompanied by a legally licensed driver.

    D) Take the Road Test

    During the road test you will be graded on:

    • Driving in traffic
    • Obeying traffic signals and signs
    • Stopping
    • Backing up
    • Judging distance
    • Parking
    • Yielding to pedestrians

    E) Get Your Vermont Driver's License

    Junior Operator's License

    While on a junior operator's license, you must obey the following driving restrictions:

    • No passengers during the first 3 months unless accompanied by a licensed parent, guardian, instructor or adult 25 years old or older
    • During the second 3 months you may drive with immediate family passengers (all passenger restrictions will be lifted after 6 months)
    • No driving for hire during the first year

    If you're caught violating any of these restrictions, your license will be recalled for 90 days

    Operator's License

    Your junior operator's license will automatically upgrade to a full operator's license upon turning 18 years old, provided the previous six months were free of recalls, suspensions or revocations. There are no driving restrictions.
