This Step: Practice Driving
Practice Driving in Washington DC
Get On the Road
With a Washington DC learner's permit you can only drive:
- With a licensed driver in the front seat who is at least 21 years old.
- Between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m.
You must log 40 hours of driving time. Be sure to practice driving only during the allowed hours. Use the Certification of Eligibility for Provisional License (Form DMV-GRAD-HR40) to track your time behind the wheel.
Get Parent or Guardian Certification
After completing 40 hours of behind-the-wheel training, have your driving supervisor (parent, guardian, tudor) sign your Certification of Eligibility for Provisional License (Form DMV-GRAD-HR40). You'll need to present this before your scheduled road test, along with a photocopy of your driving supervisor's license.
