    Get a Drivers License in Utah

    A) Make Sure You're Eligible for a Driver's License

    UT Operator's License if Younger Than 18 Years Old

    If you are under 18 years old you may apply if:

    • You're at least 16 years old
    • You have held your learner's permit for at least 6 months
    • You have a drivers ed certificate of completion from a state-approved course
    • You completed 40 hours of supervised driving

    UT Operator's License if 18 or Older

    If you are over 18 years old you may apply if:

    • You posses a learner's permit (no waiting time required)
    • You completed a state-approved drivers education class

    B) Make a Road Test Appointment

    Road tests are by appointment only. You can either schedule a test with the Driver License Division, or with a state-certified third-party tester.

    C) Gather Required Documents and Utah License Fees

    On the day of the test you'll need to bring:

    • Your learner's permit
    • Proof of identification
    • Payment if you're using a third-party tester; some may charge an additional road testing fee

    You will also be required to provide a road test vehicle that's legally registered and insured. Don't arrive alone. You will need to be accompanied by a licensed driver.

    D) Take the Road Test

    During the road test you will be graded on:

    • Driving posture
    • Observance of traffic signs and signals
    • Proper use of lanes
    • Backing
    • Attention at intersections
    • Parallel parking
    • Negotiating a three-point turn

    E) Get Your Utah Driver's License

    After you pass the road test, you'll be issued an operator's license. If you're younger than 17 years old you must obey the following restrictions:

    • You cannot drive alone with any number of passengers
    • You cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless:
      ―Accompanied in the front seat by a licensed driver 21 years old or older
      ―The driving is work related
      ―You're driving to and from a school function
      ―You're involved in an agricultural operation with a farmer or rancher
      ―You have a medical emergency
