    Get a Drivers License in Virginia

    A) Make Sure You're Eligible for a Driver's License

    Virginia Driver's License if Under 18 Years Old

    You may apply if:

    • You're at least 16 years and 3 months old
    • You have held your learner's permit for a minimum of 9 months
    • You have a certificate of completion from a state-approved drivers education course
    • You completed 45 hours of supervised driving, including 15 hours at night

    Virginia Driver's License if 18 years old or Older

    The decision is yours between one of two qualifying options:

    • You have held your learner's permit for a minimum of 60 days
      • OR
    • You completed a state-approved drivers education class

    B) Make a Road Test Appointment

    You do not have to make a road test appointment if you're 18 years old or younger. The road test will be part of your drivers education class.

    C) Gather Required Documents and Virginia License Fees

    If you did not take a road test in drivers ed, you will need to arrive at the appointed test site with:

    • Proof of identity
    • Your learner's permit
    • A legally insured vehicle with a valid safety inspection sticker, license plates and registration card

    No payments required. All test and licensing fees are collected during the permit application process.

    D)Take the Road Test

    Arrive early to the test site with a licensed driver. During the road test you will be graded on:

    • Backing
    • Parallel parking
    • Lane changing
    • Turning at intersections
    • Driving posture
    • Following traffic signs and signals

    Retake Road Test

    One test per business day.

    E) Get Your Virginia Driver's License

    Pass and you'll receive a driver's license. If younger than 18 years old, you must obey the following restrictions:

    • No driving without the accompaniment of a licensed driver between midnight and 4 a.m. except for work, school functions, or when responding to an emergency call as a volunteer firefighter or rescue squad member
    • During the 1st year, you may drive with only 1 passenger younger than 21 years old (family members exempt)
    • After the 1st year, you may carry up to 3 passengers younger than 21 years old (family members exempt)
